The news that Yellowstone will be coming to an end after season 5 has come to the shock of many fans. But fret not as this is not the end of the Yellowstone universe.
The world of Yellowstone is expanding with the upcoming sequel titled 2024. As a follow-up of Yellowstone, 2024 will be set in present day.
The news comes after it has been revealed that Yellowstone will return in November 2024 with its final episodes. Originally, the hit neo-Western drama was supposed to return in the summer of 2023 but got pushed back due to scheduling conflicts with Kevin Costner.
So far, Yellowstone has two prequel series, 1883 and 1923, that tell the origin story of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. The upcoming western series will be the first sequel in the Yellowstone universe.
When Will Yellowstone Sequel 2024 Come Out?
2024 will pick up after the events of Yellowstone have concluded, releasing shortly after the titular series. Originally, the titled was slated to have Yellowstone in the title, but that has changed in order to keep with the trend of naming the spinoffs off of years.
“Within five years, we grew Yellowstone from a hit U.S. cable show with five million viewers into a global hit franchise with over 100 million fans around the world and multiple extensions — and we’re just getting started,” said Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios.
“On the heels of 1883 and 1923’s success, our new planned spinoffs, 1944 and 2024, will take audiences on a thrilling, new, and unexpected journey with the complex and compelling storytelling that has become a hallmark of the franchise and has helped turn it into a worldwide cultural phenomenon — thanks to the creative mastermind of Taylor Sheridan,” he continued.
In addition to the announcement of 2024, it was also revealed that the franchise is expanding with another prequel series 1944.
According to Deadline, the story will continue to expand the Dutton’s ranching empire both past and present with “new locations and characters” in addition to “some crossover characters.”
Besides being a continuation of the story of Yellowstone, not much else is known about the series.
Yellowstone Sequel 2024 cast
No official cast has been revealed yet for the upcoming Yellowstone sequel 2024. However, sources report that the new series will star Matthew McConaughey in a lead role.
In a March 2023 interview with the Hollywood Reporter, the head of Paramount Media Networks, Chris McCarthy, confirmed that McConaughey will be joining the Yellowstone universe.
Original stars of Yellowstone are rumored to be starring in the upcoming series, though it has not been revealed who. While it is safe to say that John Dutton (Kevin Costner) won’t likely be among those names, possible candidates include Rip (Cole Hauser), Beth (Kelly Reilly), Kayce (Luke Grimes), and Monica (Kelsey Asbille).
However, there is the chance that 2024 may not see many familiar faces from Yellowstone. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the series may rely heavily, or possibly entirely, on a new cast and location.
“My idea of a spinoff is the same as my idea of a prequel — read into that what you will,” said Sheridan.
“There are lots of places where a way of life that existed for 150 years is slamming against a new way of life, but the challenges are completely different. There are a lot of places you can tell this story,” he continued.
There is still much to learn about this upcoming sequel but it is sure to be an exciting continuation of this beloved franchise.
Yellowstone Sequel Plot
There have been few details released about the plot of 2024, but we do know it will follow the events of Yellowstone.
David Glasser, the CEO of 101 Studios which co-produces Yellowstone said, “the Dutton story continues, picking up where Yellowstone leaves off in another epic tale. We are thrilled to bring this new journey to audiences around the world.”

Is the New Yellowstone Sequel Going to be 6666?
Prior to the news of 2024, many speculated that the spinoff series 6666 was set to be the sequel following Yellowstone. However, 6666 will be a separate series from 2024.
Back in 2021, Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and Paramount announced a multi-project deal that included Yellowstone spin-off 6666.
6666 is set to follow the cowboys of the historic 6666 Ranch in Texas. The ranch, which still operates as it did two centuries ago, is home to some of the finest horses and cattle in the nation. It is also a place where the rule of law and the laws of nature.
Though no cast list has been announced yet, it is likely that 6666 will star Yellowstone’s very own Jimmy (Jefferson White), Emily (Kathryn Kelly), and Walker (Ryan Bingham).
There is no official premiere date yet, however, the series will likely air on Paramount+ sometime in 2024 or even 2025.
